Jakkals Asem Private Bush Camp is just a stone’s throw away from Pretoria.
The Bush Camp is located in a secluded, tranquil bushveld setting in the Malaria free Dinokeng area.
The camp is an ideal venue for a quick getaway from busy city life and is the perfect place for a family getaway or for birthday celebrations. We offer self-catering accommodation for up to 20 guests. Jakkals Asem also boasts 3 beautiful bush campsites. We are pet friendly on request.
Jakkals Asem Private Bush Camp is located on the North-Eastern side of the Dinokeng Nature Reserve, between the Reserve and Rust de Winter Dam, approximately 70km North of Pretoria. Dinokeng means “a place of rivers” and the reserve offers a rich abundance of wildlife; it is a birders paradise and is Gauteng’s only free-roaming Big Five reserve.
The accommodation is rustic, yet tastefully furnished.
The Bush Camp has two units, a “Rondavel” with an ensuite outside bathroom and a “Squaredavel” with a communal bathroom. Each unit can accommodate four guests in a Queen size bed and two single bunk beds.
The Bush Camp also has four permanent tents. Each tent can accommodate two guests. The Fish Eagle and Kingfisher tents are close by to one another, perfect for parents to have their young children close by. The Nightjar tent is named after a nocturnal bird which can be heard all year around. The Woodpecker tent is positioned in a secluded area of the camp. The permanent tents are in close proximity to two communal family bathrooms with beautiful outdoor showers. An additional 4 guests can be accommodated in two 3x3m canvas tents with stretchers in. In total the Bush Camp can accommodate 20 guests. All tents and rooms have electricity, fans, hairdryers and USB charging points.
The Bush Camp has a fully equipped Lapa for up to 20 guests with a small kitchenette, gas hob, bar fridge, ice machine and indoor & outdoor braai areas. The “Bunker House” situated in close proximity to the Lapa has a Fridge/Freezer, Microwave oven, and washing machine for guests to make use of.
The outdoor braai area has a boma area where guests can sit and relax next to a crackling bushveld fire. There is also a separate outdoor “fire-circle” for those late conversations around the fire.

What makes Jakkals Asem special?
The sun setting and the birds getting ready to settle in for the night are music to your ears. It is a phase of transitioning from day into night. The jackal starts calling their mates and if you are lucky, you can hear the lions roar from the Game Reserve side or from Mystic Monkeys. It is quiet and sound travels a long distance. As the campfire starts crackling, the bushbabies may come around to beg for some cheese. Early in the morning, you can hear the same transition from night into day. The bush wakes up and you can tell by the birds which season it is. It is spring when the Southern Boubou (Waterfiskaal) starts calling. It is December when the Woodland Kingfisher (Bosveldvisvanger) starts courting the females. It is summer when the Fish Eagle starts calling for a mate. By the time it turns winter, the Woodpeckers arrive and the Red-chested Cuckoo (Piet-my-vrou) turns silent. The hornbills are active all year round. It is bushveld paradise all year long. That is what makes Jakkals Asem so special.
